Auto Diagnostics & Check Engine Light Service in Wilmington, MA

Cheap code readers tell you what's wrong. We tell you why — with manufacturer-level equipment and fleet-grade troubleshooting.

A check engine light is almost never just one thing. A modern vehicle's computer can throw dozens of related codes when a single sensor fails — and replacing the wrong part is an expensive way to learn that. We use manufacturer-level scan tools and the same diagnostic process we apply to commercial fleet vehicles: find the root cause, document it, fix it once.

Common Codes We See

  • P0420 / P0430 — catalytic converter efficiency below threshold
  • P0300 series — random or cylinder-specific misfires
  • P0171 / P0174 — system running lean
  • P0455 / P0456 — evaporative emissions leak

Same code, different car, different cause. Bring it in and we'll tell you what's actually happening. Call for current pricing.

Frequently Asked

Why is my check engine light on?+

It can be anything from a loose gas cap to a failing oxygen sensor or catalytic converter. The only way to know is a proper scan — ideally one that interprets the live data, not just reads the code.

How much does a diagnostic cost?+

Call for current pricing. We'll confirm what the diagnosis involves for your vehicle before any work starts.

Do you diagnose EVs?+

Yes — including Rivian, as the only authorized Rivian service shop in Massachusetts. EVs have their own diagnostic stack and we have the tools and certification to read it.

What does a diagnostic actually involve?+

Reading the stored codes is the first five minutes, not the job. From there we look at freeze-frame data from when the fault set, watch live sensor values, compare them against what the manufacturer says they should be, and test the circuit or component directly. You get a plain-language explanation of the root cause and what fixing it involves.

A parts store read my code for free. Why can't I just replace that part?+

Because the code names the circuit or the symptom, not the failed part. A lean-condition code can be a vacuum leak, a dirty mass airflow sensor, a weak fuel pump or an exhaust leak upstream of the sensor — same code, four different repairs. Testing costs less than replacing three parts that were fine.

The light comes on and then goes off by itself. Can you still find it?+

Usually, yes. The computer keeps history and freeze-frame data even after the light clears, and pending codes often survive too. Don't clear the codes before bringing it in — that erases the best evidence we have. If it's truly intermittent we may road-test or monitor it with equipment connected.

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?+

A steady light generally means drive it, but get it checked soon. A flashing light means an active misfire dumping raw fuel into the exhaust, which can destroy a catalytic converter in a short drive — pull over and don't keep going. Any light combined with overheating, loss of power or a warning chime means stop.

My car failed inspection on emissions. Can you help?+

Yes. Emissions failures are usually either a stored fault, monitors that haven't completed a drive cycle, or an evaporative system leak. We'll identify which, repair the underlying cause and make sure the readiness monitors have run before you go back for a retest.

Do hybrids and EVs throw check engine lights too?+

They have their own warning system and far more networked modules, so faults tend to show as a service message rather than a classic check engine light. Diagnosing them means reading high-voltage battery, charging, thermal and control-module data with EV-capable tooling — which is what we use, including on Rivian.

What do I get at the end of the diagnosis?+

A documented report of what we found, what caused it, and what repair we recommend, plus a written estimate before anything is done. If the fix is something simple you can handle yourself, we'll tell you that too. Call for current pricing.
