A transmission problem is the repair most drivers dread, because they assume the answer is a whole new transmission. Often it isn't. Many shifting complaints trace back to low or degraded fluid, a leak, a failed solenoid or sensor, or a wiring fault, and those repairs cost far less. BFS Auto Services diagnoses first, at 779 Woburn St in Wilmington, and tells you what we found before anything comes apart.
Symptoms Worth Getting Checked
- Slipping: the engine revs climb but the car doesn't accelerate to match.
- Harsh, late, or delayed shifts, or a clunk going into Drive or Reverse.
- Shuddering at low speed.
- Red or reddish-brown fluid under the car, usually toward the front or middle.
- A burning smell after driving, which points to overheated fluid.
- A transmission or check engine light, or the car stuck in one gear (limp mode).
Fleet Experience With Drivetrains
Boston Fleet Services keeps commercial vans and trucks running under heavy loads and constant stop-and-go, which is the hardest life a transmission can have. That work taught us to treat fluid condition and temperature as early warnings, and to rule out the simple causes before recommending the expensive one.

Frequently Asked
Does a transmission problem always mean I need a new transmission?+
No. Low or burnt fluid, leaks, failed solenoids, sensors and wiring faults all cause shifting problems, and all of them can be repaired without replacing the transmission. We diagnose first and tell you which one you're dealing with.
Is it safe to keep driving with a slipping transmission?+
Not for long. Slipping generates heat, and heat is what destroys the internal clutches and the fluid. A transmission that could have been repaired can become one that has to be replaced. If it's slipping, flaring between gears, or stuck in one gear, get it looked at before your next long drive.
How often should transmission fluid be changed?+
It varies widely by vehicle. Some manufacturers specify an interval; others call the fluid lifetime, which usually assumes gentle use. Towing, stop-and-go commuting and hot weather all count as severe service. We follow your manufacturer's spec and check the fluid's condition, not just its level.
Can a fluid change cause problems on a high-mileage transmission?+
It's a real concern on some neglected transmissions, which is why we look at the fluid and the vehicle's history before recommending a service. We'll tell you plainly whether a fluid service is the right call.
What's that red fluid under my car?+
Red or reddish-brown fluid is usually transmission fluid, though power steering fluid can look similar on some vehicles. Common sources are pan gaskets, axle seals and cooler lines. A transmission that runs low on fluid will start slipping and overheating, so leaks are worth fixing early.
My car shudders at low speed. Is that the transmission?+
It can be. Shudder is a common complaint on CVTs, dual-clutch transmissions and torque converters. It can also be an engine misfire or a worn motor mount. We road-test and scan before deciding.
What does transmission work cost?+
It depends entirely on what's wrong. A sensor or a leak is a very different job from internal damage. Call for current pricing. We diagnose first and give you a written estimate before any work starts.
